Las Vegas Pinball Hall of Fame!!

November 10th, 2010 | by keef
Posted In: Blog

Just got back from Las Vegas and the Vegas Valley Book Fest.  One of the highlights (besides sitting across from Felix Silla, a.k.a. Twikki from Buck Rogers), was my trip to the Pinball Hall of Fame!

The PHOF houses around 200 old and new pinball machines in pristine condition, and there for you to drop quarters in.  I played some serious classics, like Twilight Zone, Theatre of Magic, Medievel (sp?) Madness, and  some super old ones from the fifties and sixties and some totally strange ones.

Apparently, one of the machines I played was a prototype of a game that completely tweaked the traditional pinball machine.  It was a game that went up three levels, and was so out of the ordinary that no one wanted to take a chance on it, so only two were made.

I hear the owners have about 800(!!) machines that they bring in and out of the PHOF, so it’s worth checking out every time you visit Vegas.  Thanks to F. Andrew Taylor and his brood for taking me there.

Here’s a good list of favorite pinball machines.  I agree with most of what people are talking about.

I didn’t get to Harlem when I was in NYC last month, so Bill Withers live will have to do:

D.C. SLIDESHOW/BOOKSIGNING W/KEEF & RICHARD THOMPSON

September 3rd, 2010 | by keef
Posted In: Blog

Hey y’all!! I’ll be in the Washington D.C. area next week to do a few events celebrating the release of the first Knight Life collection, Chivalry Ain’t Dead!!

Thursday, Sept.9th 7pm-SLIDESHOW/BOOKSIGNING @ POLITICS & PROSE w/ RICHARD THOMPSON (Cul de Sac)

Politics and Prose is the finest bookstore of its kind in the D.C. area.  I met Lynda Barry when she did a signing there two years ago. I’ll be doing my thing alongside D.C. homeboy Richard Thompson, whose wonderful strip, Cul de Sac, has garnered praise from the likes of Bill Watterson  (Calvin & Hobbes)!!  I’ll have books, prints and original art in tow.  The Obamas said they might be coming by.

Location:

Politics and Prose
5015 Connecticut Ave. NWWashington, D.C. 20008

Saturday/Sunday Sept. 11/12th 11am-7pm-SMALL PRESS EXPO in Bethesda, MD

SPX is one of the finest small press events in the country.  And this year I’m an official special guest!! There’s a nice combination of west coast, east coast, Canadian and European creators.  Plus, the Ignatz Awards is my favorite award ceremony because it’s so brief.  I might actually present an award for the first time since my infamous hosting gig a few years back!!  PLUS: I’m doing a panel on Sunday @ 2pm:

Brave New Comic Strips
2:00 | Brookside Conference Room
The newspaper industry, long the home of American comics’ first popular dedicated format, faces an existential crisis presented by the emergence and proliferation of digital media. Against all odds, artists interested in the daily strip format continue to produce work with an eye for print. Mike Rhode will discuss the present and the future of the newspaper comic strip with Marguerite Dabaie, Keith Knight, and Richard Thompson.

Where: Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center

When: Open to the public Saturday and Sunday, September 11 and 12, 2010.

Times:
Saturday: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm
Sunday: noon – 6:00 pm

See you in D.C.!!

SPELLING BEE FOR CHEATERS/KNIGHT LIFE TRIAL IN SEATTLE TIMES

August 7th, 2010 | by keef
Posted In: Blog

SPELLING BEE FOR CHEATERS!!

I am soooo late getting on this.  Remember way, way back when I did a mini-golf for cheaters event?  I raised money for my mini-golf team so we could cheat during the tournament?  The same thing is happening, but this time it’s a spelling bee!

826LA’s Spelling Bee for Cheaters raises $$$ for 826LA, a non-profit that provides writing workshops for kids 6-18.  It’s a great organization, of which I happen to be on the board of directors.  But that doesn’t stop me from wanting to crush the hearts and minds of all competitors!!

My Team: I’ve put together a team of gentleman cartoonists: Dave Kellett (Sheldon) , myself, and David Malki! (Wondermark). We’re called “the Sweaty Hams”!!

Here’s the skinny: Go to the website and donate whatever you can (WE ONLY HAVE ONE WEEK!!).  THE MORE WE RAISE, THE MORE WE CAN CHEAT DURING THE SPELLING BEE. I know you won’t let me know.  If I can get 200 folks to donate $25 (or more)….

Sponsor me here.

THE KNIGHT LIFE ON TRIAL AT SEATTLE TIMES

My daily comic strip, the Knight Life, is currently on trial in Seattle’s daily, the Seattle Times. If you are in the Pacific Northwest, please. please. please write to the paper and let em know you love the strip.
