"The Knight Life is undeniably the best new laugh- and thoughtprovoker on the comics page. Not since Calvin and Hobbes has there been so novel an entertainment in the funnies."
- R.C.Harvey, The Comics Journal
"Point blank: Keith Knight is one of our generation's best cartoonists. If he were any funnier, he'd be illegal."
- Jeff Chang, hip-hop journalist & author
I cannot believe people think it is acceptable to require our soldiers, who are supposed to be our bravest, most honorable ladies and gentlemen to TELL LIES – something our society considers the epitome of cowardly, shameful behavior!
Thank you for posting this. It is an amazing, six-panel explanation of exactly why it is wrong to discriminate against homosexuals in the service. Besides, most of the western world apart from the United States allows openly gay/lesbian/transsexual people in their military forces … heck … in Great Britain the Army even paid for one soldier’s SRS to allow that soldier to keep serving her country. The United States is backward and hopelessly outdated in this. Love of freedom, freedom to love!
I just wanted to commend you for your fabulous cartoon discussing the
“actual” freedoms we are “fighting” for. Well
done. I only hope it hits home at the top and Obama steps up to make
some changes.
Thank you for your talent and for sharing it.

KEITH,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR BEING SO BRAVE. THE LESSON IN “VET MENTORING” WAS STRONG, BUT GENTLE ENOUGH TO GET PEOPLE THINKING, INSTEAD OF JUST GETTING DEFENSIVE.
I READ YOU EVERYDAY IN THE DENVER POST AND LAUGH SOMETIMES, BUT ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY ALWAYS,
SINCERELY,

I wanted to say thank you. The comic today that you drew about the gay
soldier serving overseas was, to put it frankly, brave. To broach that
subject on the comics page and to so clearly get your message across was
something that I know every member of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and
Transgender community applauds you for. Although I am sure you will get many
complaints for voicing your opinion today, you can rest assured that this
comic made a positive impact on many people throughout this country.
Thank you for standing up for the soldiers out there who cannot stand up for
themselves, their partners, and their rights.
Sincerely,
A.
Dear Keith,
Thank you for today’s comic strip (July 26th), about the gay soldier. I thought it was brilliant. I’m going to send it to my friends and family. Your strip is fairly new to our paper, and I love it!
S.
Normally a great comic strip, your commentary on gays in the military may have hit the
right note to make disbelievers rethink their attitude. Yours is a strip that ranks up
there with some of the best comic strips with social content, like Pogo and Doonesbury.
Keep it coming.
Bizarre isn’t it, that the male military is afraid to be sexually objectified by other
males, but are quite content to sexually objectify their female colleagues without
sympathizing with them. I’ve never heard them say two wrongs don’t make a right, but
that must be what they’re thinking.
Yup, the “Western” armies have a bunch of abnormal behavior that they ship overseas, that’s why they get their a$$e$ kicked in one on one combat and get shipped back in body bags.
Transgender? That don’t even make no sense. That’s like I can steer a car with my tongue, even though I have hands and feet. Just because you can doesn’t mean it’s wise to do.
Ross, two points:
one, homosexuality isn’t exactly abnormal. I’m not sure on the numbers, but it’s somewhere between 5 and 10% of the population identify as homosexual; at least twice that many have had some sort of homosexual experience.
two, allowing gays in the military doesn’t mean the fighting force is jeapordized. I can’t speak for other countries, but mine (New Zealand) allows gays to serve openly, and is one of the most bad-ass forces in the world given our small size. Google ‘Willie Apiata’ for an example of one of our best (he’s straight, but point still stands).
I believe that the whole American way was to be free AND pursue happiness. I’d be pissed if i came back and was told that I’m not allowed to be Pagan. It’s the same thing in my eyes, closed minds and a religious influenced government is a fast track to killing our own people again.
> Since when is accepting something that is blatantly wrong ok? Doesn’t nature teach us that a man and a woman are meant to be together?
In terms of Nature, homosexuality allows us to have high population densities, and the benefits of partnerships, without over-breeding. It’s an evolutionary form of birth-control. Evolution favors strong populations, _not_ each individual’s reproductive successes.
“Since when is accepting something that is blatantly wrong ok? Doesn’t nature teach us that a man and a woman are meant to be together?”
Actually nature teaches us that all sorts of companionship are acceptable. Not only are there examples of animals of different species finding companionship together, but there are countless examples of homosexuality among all different species in nature. The idea that homosexuality is “bad”, “wrong” or “unnatural” is purely a human one and usually comes from religious people, which is ironic given that very few things are less natural than an irrational and unprovable belief in god.
This Sunday strip is as important as Charles M. Schultz’ one of Sally and the C- grade regarding a piece of wire. I hope everyone reads this in the future as a turning point in opinion.
This particular strip isn’t even remotely funny… I was delivered to this page by stumble-upon, so I’ve never seen a KnightLifeComic before, but since the first thing I read on the page was “Bringing the funny back to the funny pages.” I was greatly disappointed by the lack of any comedy in your comic.
Keef, – I used to think “don’t ask; don’t tell” was an okay way to handle this issue. You’ve convinced me I was wrong. Thanks for the education.
Can somebody say amen?

Folks,
Here’s a bunch more emails I got about the strip…

Amazing, poignant, and perfect. I really don’t see any room here for argument. Beautiful.
What’s wrong with “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell?”

I’m still confused why Americans think that going to other countries and killing people is fighting for their own freedom.
