Keith,
Everyone knows about the media meltdown, but few feel the sting like you, and, well, me. I’m saddened to have seen the passing of the P.I., and your gig in the paper. I’ve been following your work since I first came across The K Chronicles in the Funny Times shortly after I graduated from the University of Montana in 1995: one sticks in my head in particular that had you as a slug portraying jet lag while talking in a pub to a local about banning guns in favor or knives to curtail violence by making it more personal… I think the punch line was “A sharp point, too.” When the Knight Life was a test strip in the P.I., I wrote them a letter lobbying for your inclusion.
Now, how do I feel the media meltdown sting? Well, up until Febuary 23 I was the editor/writer/layout guy/photographer for the monthly Madison Park Times, and, more importantly, the South Seattle Beacon (which was weekly for more than 80 years until this past November). So, I got layed off on Feb. 23rd with my boss plopping a layoff notice on my water mug as he walked by with a muted “I’m sorry, Erik” on his way to do the same with five other of my collegues (including the editor of the Capitol Hill Times, Doug Schwartz, who worked there for 11 years).
It’s a harsh tail spin that has me looking for other lines of work. One of my friends I met through my work at the SSB for the past 4.5 years was Jeremy Eaton, a great local illustrator who is tied in to the Fantagraphics crew here in Seattle. A few weeks ago Jeremy and I went for a “you got layed off pint” at Fremont’s famous soccer pub, George & Dragon. Jeremy, who makes his living doing political toons, illustrations, and other newsprint derived work, said his business had dropped by 60 percent. When the P.I. went, I thought of all the cartoonists I admire and have worked with, and I raised a silent toast.
So, this spiel is my long way of saying that I’d love to help you get the word out for your April 18 signing in Seattle, and I hope to be there! Please send me a flyer and I’ll hit all the coffee shops, record stores, and cool places I can.
Sincerely,
Erik Hansen

Erik,
Thanks for the great message. Turns out the thng I’m doing in Seattle is less of a signing and more of a fundraising event. They’ve done a lot of publicity, so I’m just doing an abbreviated slideshow for the event. If you can make it, it’s called Food as Art and it’s at the Bell Harbor Conference Center this Saturday.
Thing is, it’s $125 to get in (good cuase, though). And the best chefs in Seattle will be serving some fine grub. Plus my mom will be there.
Cheers!
Keef
Although Evil Twin Sis is spreading the word that KK & family (including L’il Gravy) will be on public display Friday afternoon at the (T)ea Gallery in downtown Seattle.
Heck, even if they’re not there, you’ll enjoy having a cuppa tea and a chat with the Evil Twin!
